Braille Book About Snow

snow braille book collage

I actually got this idea after seeing a kindergarten student project on the wall at one of the schools I serve.  You mix half shaving cream and half Elmer's glue together.  When it dries, it creates this puffy, soft texture.  The only issue is that it isn't cold, but I think it is a good texture to use for creating "snow".  It is also a lot of fun for students to paint with.  My preschool braille learner created a story about snow using this.

Materials:
  • Card stock, index cards or braille paper
  • Shaving cream
  • Elmer's glue
  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Thick paint brush
  • Brailler
  • Markers

Procedure:
  1. Mix half Elmer's glue and half shaving cream together in a bowl.  It will become very fluffy.  It doesn't have to be exact.
  2. If making a book, make sure to have student braille the words on the page first, then paint on the "snow".  You may want to create a barrier for them using Wikki Stix.
  3. Allow to dry over night.
  4. Let them read their story and tactually explore the "snow".
