Red Nose Day

How many times do we hear that our student with a visual impairment won't "look at me" or "towards me" or "pay attention"? I don't think I can count that high. I have suggested to females that they wear red lipstick. I've worked with my students to look "towards" the person speaking or the "glow on the wall", as one student described it. It is a socially preferred behavior and part of our ECC (Expanded Core Curriculum).
Well, May 26th is the annual Red Nose Day. From now until then you can purchase a red nose from Walgreens for $1. The money goes to help fight poverty and social injustice, and the nose is a wonderful tool to aid me in some of my lessons. I love using this nose with my students who have additional disabilities or CVI (Cortical Visual Impairment). My students with low vision really love the red nose and playing "Hide and Go Seek" with my face wearing the nose or the nose by itself. I'm sure I look silly wearing it, but my students benefit from the nose and for me, that's what's important.
