Advent Calendar for Beginning Braille Reader

Advent calendar with ornaments

I made this Advent calendar for my son, who is in Kindergarten and is deafblind.  He is just beginning to recognize braille numbers and this calendar gives him daily practice with numbers from 1-25!  This calendar could be used in many ways, depending on the child's age and interests.

  • Give the child a braille number and ask him or her to match it to the corresponding number on the calendar.
  • Mix up the numbers on the calendar and ask him or her to put them back in the correct order.
  • Ask older children questions such as "Today is the 4th of December.  How many days left until Christmas?"
  • Invite the children to help to create the braille calendar and small ornaments to hang on it each day.
