The Right to Write

Joy of OT logo

This website is designed to help expand the understanding of written expression for students with significant disabilities, including those who are deafblind.  The site includes a series of video clips covering written expression for students with severe and multiple disabilities, as well as a list of handouts, links to resources, and a forum for members.

AT Collage

This project covers not only the why, but the when and how to teach written expression for students with the most severe learning challenges including intellectual, physical disabilities and deaf-blindness. There is a growing body of evidence-based practice that demonstrates writing is an important part of literacy instruction. Staff who work in school systems need more training because there are still many barriers for students with significant disabilities in learning not only to read, but also write.
