Pilates as a Literacy Tool for Students with Visual Impairments
Submitted by Charlotte Cushman on Sep 05, 2014
This blog post by Mirea Sharifi of Tucson, Arizona describes how Pilates lessons with a group of students with visual impairments and varying levels of cognitive ability have helped to improve their development in many areas. Specifically, progress was noted with posture/trunk support, speech and language skills, orientation and mobility, and literacy. Improved posture helped students to use read braille and use their BrailleNotes more efficiently.
This article is an important reminder of the ways in which a wide range of activities and interaction with many different types of specialists can have surprising benefits for our students.
