The Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly

I saw this idea on this site via a link I clicked on a couple of weeks. I have now made my own version, but this time adapted to make it tactile for a child with visual impairment. The link was to a website run by a speech and language therapist and she had created a fun resource to support children with initial letter sounds.

Here I have made it tactile and a little bit funky!!

I made the hat from fur and added a big flower, the hair is made from Wikki Stix.

The tactile picture is attached to a box, the children can post their objects and words through the old woman’s mouth, which is cut out to enable the objects to be posted

Literacy Ideas:

  • Tell the story of the old woman who swallowed a fly, children post the objects.
  • Post objects together with matching word.
  • Focus on each word, fly, coin, violin and find other objects beginning with each of the initial sounds.
  • Post all objects beginning with letter f, c, v etc. Link into the rhyme about the old woman who swallowed a fly.
  • Children to make their own old woman, decorate hat and make fun hair.

Numeracy:

  • Count the objects the old woman swallows as they are posted
  • Make up counting games, e..g the old woman swallowed five coins, 3 violins,
  • Make up categorising games, e.g. The old woman swallowed all round objects, all objects smaller than a coin, shiny objects, blue objects etc.

I hope you find the resources useful.
