The Assessment of Braille Literacy Skills: UEB and EBAE (2016) provides educators with a meaningful assessment of braille literacy skills.  Now in its third edition, Assessment of Braille Literacy Skills (ABLS) features the four guiding principles of a meaningful assessment of braille literacy skills and provides educators a tool to document student strengths and weaknesses in braille skills as mandated by the Texas Braille Bill. Assessment in Unified English Braille (UEB) and English Braille American Edition (EBAE) are included.
 

Four Guiding Principles of a Meaningful Assessment of Braille Literacy Skills

  1. focus on literacy, not solely or primarily on braille code skills
  2. multi-faceted approach
  3. ongoing nature
  4. meaningful integration of the assessment and intructional processes
Compiled by Dr. Alan Koenig and Dr. Carol Farrenkopf, it is an informal, criterion-referenced tool that addresses both braille code skills and broader literacy skills. 

The ABLS is divided into three sections:

  • Emergent Literacy
  • Academic Literacy (Reading and Writing)
  • Functional Literacy
