Is e-Reading Story Time or Screen Time?

The benefits of reading aloud to young children is well documented, but as tablets and eBooks become increasingly common, parents and researchers are wondering if reading aloud an eBook promotes early literacy in the same was that reading aloud a hard copy of print or braille does. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises reading aloud from birth, and yet they also advise against screen time for children under the age of two, so what should parents and early interventionists do? The answer is not yet clear, especially as tablets and other mobile devices are too new for longterm studies to have been performed.
